David Schmidt presented at ISMK Mobile Security Conference 2025
The ISMK Mobile Security Conference was held from 17.9-18.9, 2025, in Stralsund, Germany.

David Schmidt presented his paper Analyzing the iOS Local Network Permission from a Technical and User Perspective at the ISMK Mobile Security Conference in Stralsund.
The conference offered a great opportunity to network with researchers and industry working on mobile security topics, listen to related talks, and present our work on the iOS local network permission.
Local Network Permission
Apple introduced a local network permission in iOS 14 to counter security and privacy threats from apps’ access to the local network. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of this feature, examining its technical security, real-world app usage, and user understanding. We found two ways to bypass the permission, as well as gaps in the protection of network addresses. A large-scale app analysis highlights how iOS and Android differ in local network access, while a user survey reveals that, although most participants recognize potential threats, misconceptions are widespread.
